Biography Norman Jackson
From Ketchikan, Alaska, Norman Jackson is a wood carver of Tlingit heritage. He studied advanced carving at the Kitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Art and then spent a year apprenticing with Phil Janze and Dempsey Bob, a master Tlingit carver.
Norman Jackson began his career as a maker of engraved gold and silver jewelry but changed his specialty to wood carving. Subjects include bowls, masks, paddles, cultural symbols, eagles and fish. He uses wood from the nearby forests, saws his logs in half, soaks them in water and carves with handmade knives and adzes.
