Oscar Hallwig (1836 - ca. 1924)
Born March 20, 1836 in Dresden, Hallwig spent his youth there, receiving his artistic education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts where he was also awarded several first class medals. Entering the U.S., the artist initially settled in Chicago in 1870 and opened a large studio. A short time later the studio and all his possessions were lost to the great fire that destroyed much of Chicago in 1871.
By 1878 the artist finally settled in Baltimore, spending the remainder of his life there. He was to paint portraits of many prominent Baltimoreans and a number of U.S. Presidents.
