Biography Oskar Adolfovitch Hoffmann
Born in 1851 in Dopat, Oskar Georg Adolf (Adolfovitch) Hoffmann studied between 1871 and 1878 at the art academy of Düsseldorf inter alia with Andreas Müller and Eugen Dücker. In 1882 Hoffmann was active in St. Petersburg and since 1884 a free member of the Russian Imperial academy of arts. His works were exhibited in Düsseldorf, Riga, St. Petersburg and Vienna, and in 1894 the Great Berlin Art Exhibition.
In addition to his work as a portraitist his subject is characterized by Estonian landscapes in accordance with the Hague School. They mostly depict idyllic, spacious scenes of rural life, in the earthy coloring and misty light with low horizon lines. In addition, he created various etchings. Hoffmann
