Biography Ouray Meyers
Emerson Ouray Meyers was born at dawn in Taos, NM on October 7, 1938 to Ralph Waldo Emerson Meyers and Rowena Meyers. Ouray passed away on January 7, 2016 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque after a brief illness. Known to the Taos Pueblo Indians as ‘Toshanie’ (boy of the dawn), Ouray’s father named him after Chief Ouray of the Umcompadre Utes. Ouray graduated from Taos High and joined the Air Force where he served for six years. He then attended The University of New Mexico and Arizona State where he received a degree in education. He returned home to Taos and taught fifth grade. After a few years of teaching, Ouray started painting full-time. Ouray’s first gallery was the Moonfire Gallery in Cabot Plaza.
