Biography Patricia Douthwaite
Pat Douthwaite was an unconventional character, who enjoyed challenging
the social mores of the day. She was a habitué of Soho in the later
1950s, which was full of post-war 'spivs' and establishments like the "2
I's" coffee bar, birthplace of British rock and roll. Teddy Boys would
have abounded at that time. This important picture is not unlike her
portrait of husband Paul Hogarth, Hogey Bear, painted the same
year, and thus the title of the present work may be (in part) a pun.
Ironically, her first major London group exhibition, Fantasy and Figuration
at the ICA in Feb. 1967, also featured the work of Ian Dury, who had
studied with Peter Blake. Dury dressed in teddy boy garb and was to
