Biography Paul Chan
Born in Hong Kong and raised in Nebraska, Paul Chan, whose studio is in New York City, is often referred
to as an activist artist but says he prefers to draw a line between his
ideas on political subjects and his artwork.
In 2006, the Whitney
Museum of American Art featured his work, Ist Light, which was
a floor projection that became shaped like a trapezoid and referenced
the collapse of the World Trade Center as well as religious themes
including Rapture and the Second Coming.
Chan has traveled extensively in Asia, Europe and South America and was
briefly a journalist. His interests are wide ranging from
history, politics, aesthetics and cultural studies.
