Biography Paul Roland Smith
Paul Roland Smith was born September 12, 1916 in Colony, Kansas. He earned a BS from Kansas State College in Pittsburg graduating in 1939 and, after World War II, earned a MFA from the Univ. of Iowa. Pupil of James Lechay, Mauricio Lasansky, Stuart Edie, and Byron Burford. Taught in Colorado Springs, CO, Fort Scott, and Hays before moving to Cedar Falls, IA where he taught at the Univ. of Northern Iowa from 1950-64. In 1965 he became chairman of the art department at Hamline Univ. in St. Paul, MN where he remained until retiring in 1975.
Moved to Pequot Lakes, MN in 2002. He died on March 31, 2003 in Brainerd, Minnesota
