Philip Andreevich Maliavin (1869 Kazanka - 1940 Nice)
Upon his return to Russia following a six-year stay in Greece where he had been studying icon painting, Filipp Maliavin entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. Maliavin was enrolled at the academy from 1892-1894. Pavel Tretyakov recognized the young artists talent and acquired two of his works while Maliavin was still a student. After the successful completion of the core curriculum at the Imperial Academy Maliavin went on to study in the studio of Ilya Repin. After graduating, Malyavin developed a distinct non-narrative style focused on the representations of lively peasant women, of which this is drawing an example.
