Lewis Teague was the youngest child of Industrial Designer Walter Dorwin Teague, and was born November 30, in 1917 in Jamaica, New York. He attended Public School 101 and graduated in 1932, and then attended Gow School for Boys, graduating in 1939.
Given the choice of what he wanted to study when he reached college, he originally chose architecture at the Pratt Institute around 1938. After two years at Pratt Institute, Tom Benremo, with whom he studied, urged him to take up painting seriously. He entered the Art Students League in 1940, and began studying painting.
