Ralph Gibson was born in Los Angeles, California in 1939 and received his education from the San Francisco Art Institute. Gibson founded, with other photographers, the Lustrum Press.
His work evolved from documentary to surrealism. Much of his work is two dimensional. He doesn't crop his photos, but tries to compose the view before taking the picture. The works have allegorical and surrealistic overtones. Gibson's work has strong feeling of mystery, combined with a minimalistic approach to composition.
