Ralph Novak was born in New York City on 24 February 1928, the son of George
and Elsie Novak. He studied at the famed High School of Music and Art and
at the High School of Industrial Arts. In 1945 he received a scholarship to
the Art Student's League where he took classes with Raphael Soyer.
He moved to Los Angeles in 1946 and received a scholarship to the Kahn Institute of Art. Working in a wide variety of mediums including oil, in, drawings, and sketches, he began exhibiting in shows at the Institute, at the Los Angeles County Art Museum, the Los Angeles County Fair Art Show, and in a variety of galleries. <
