Biography   Ray Frederick Coyle

Born in Fort Dodge, IA in 1885. Coyle moved as a child to Oakland where his father was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. After attending Oakland public schools, he received degrees from Princeton University and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Primarily a self-taught artist, after college he established an interior decorating business in San Francisco and provided murals for many private homes, offices, and churches in the San Francisco Bay Area. His murals, painted in the California decorative style, are reminiscent of Arthur Mathews while his pen-and-ink work is akin to that of Aubrey Beardsley. He worked for years as a pen-and-ink illustrator for John Henry Nash, a San Francisco printer of fine quality books. Coyle d
