Biography Richard F. Gates
An easel and mural painter, Richard Gates was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He studied at the University of Iowa Art Department and under Grant Wood. He exhibited with the Iowa Art Salon in 1933 and 1934 and with Iowa Artists in 1938.
For the WPA, he received a commission to paint a mural for the Harlan, Iowa Post Office in 1935, and under the direction of Grant Wood, he worked on the mural When Tillage Begins for the Library of Iowa State College.
