An important early Canadian painter, ornamental artist, commercial artist, carver and educator, Robert Clow Todd, is believed to have been born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England (about 2 miles from the border of Scotland and 45 miles south east of Edinburgh). He appears to have lived and worked in Edinburgh and London before immigrating to Quebec City, Canada in 1834. He lived there until 1853 when he moved to Toronto, Canada where he died.
