OGILBY, Robert E. (1825-1884). Painter, art teacher. Born in England in 1825. Ogilby came to California about 1852 as a topographer. Several of his sketches were used by lithographers in San Francisco. He taught drawing and painting at Durant University and continued there for eight years after it became the University of California in 1868.
His rare works include watercolors of Mt Shasta, Lake Tahoe, Pescadero, and the Missions.
Ogilby died in Oakland, CA on March 9, 1884. Exh: Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1869. In: CSL; Society of Calif. Pioneers (Grass Valley, 1852); Bancroft Library (UC).
Found him in the 1870 Alameda (CA) Census -age 45 born England. Occupation, drawing teacher. (Roll 86, page 163)
