Robert Elisha Burke maintained an established reputation as a marine watercolorist. Regarded as a painter in El Paso, Texas, Burke traveled throughout the Southwest painting landscapes. In addition, Burke achieved a career in teaching the fine arts.
Burke was born in Winstead, Connecticut. He graduated from the Pratt Institute, New York in 1907. He was also a member of the fine arts faculty of Indiana University, Bloomington from 1907-1949. During the 1920s and 1930s he painted in Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico in addition to painting in Texas. Burke died in Bloomington, Indiana.
Burke was a member of the Brown County (Indiana) Art Gallery Association and the El Paso Art Guild. Exhibitions include Woman's club, El Paso (1929).<
