Robert Hooton (1917- ) was born in Washington, D.C. At the age of two, he moved to Illinois. In the early 1940s, he returned to Washington, D.C., where he discovered art by Picasso, Van Gogh, et. al., at the Phillips Museum Gallery. Hooton's work has been influenced by Arthur Dove, a friend of Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O'Keeffe, and one of the first abstract painters.
Hooton graduated with a B.A. in architectural design from the University of Illinois (1940) and did graduate studies at the University of New Mexico College of Fine Arts (1950-51). During WWII and the invasion of Iwo Jima, he was a U.S. Navy Seabee, draftsman and combat artist (1
