Biography Robert Whitelaw
A painter and director of the Carolina Art Association in Charleston, South Carolina, Robert Whitelaw was a precocious youngster who at age twelve, took classes at the Charleston Museum from Laura Bragg and then became an apprentice in the exhibition area. He also studied at the Gibbes Museum with Alfred Hutty, who persuaded Whitelaw to go to New York for training at the National Academy of Design. In New York, he also assisted a designer of miniature rooms.
After his stay in New York, Whitelaw returned to his native city and earned a degree from the College of Charleston where he also studied theatre. Applying his painting and theatre training, he then spent much of his career as the first paid director of the Carolina Art Associati
