Born in California in April 1881. While living in San Francisco in 1899-1900, Martin was a pupil at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute. He then worked in the City as a lithographer, engraver, and bookbinder. By 1930 he was in Portland, Oregon; after 1936 he was working in Los Angeles.
