Biography Robert Schwartz
A San Francisco-based painter, Robert Schwartz is best known for his miniature narrative paintings, usually no bigger than 7 by 9 inches, done either in gouache on paper or oil on wooden panel. Often his paintings are of people in familiar environments with unsettling elements relative to human mistakes and incorrect social behavior.
Schwartz was born in Chicago and earned a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1970. Shortly after, he became a resident of San Francisco and exhibited widely on both coasts including a 1990 retrospective at the de Saisset Museum in Santa Clara and in 2000, a retrospective at the Frye Museum in Seattle.
He died December 5, 2000 in San Francisco.
