Biography Rosalie Gill
Little is known of the life and works of the expatriate painter Rosalie Lorraine Gill. She was thought to have been born in 1867 in Elmira, New York. In 1874 she moved from New York to Baltimore with her father, who probably encouraged her early interest in art, since he owned a painting collection and in 1888 helped found an art group in Baltimore called the Charcoal Club.
Gill began her studies at the age of twelve at the Art Students League in New York where she studied under William Merritt Chase, whose portrait of her (unlocated) was exhibited at the 1889 Exposition. Chase's influence is quite evident in Gill's pictures, they both "stylistically and thematically" relate to his oeuvre. It is also interesting to note that in 1884
