Born in Dallas in 1903, Rosalie Speed, aside from early years in Lake Charles, then Shreveport Louisiana, grew up in the Oak Lawn area of Dallas. She received her education at Southern Methodist University, and the College of Industrial Arts (now Texas Women's University) in Denton, as well as the Aunspaugh School in Dallas.
Speed was invited to join the Frank Reaugh Art Club in 1929. She was active in the Dallas art scene and Texas regionalist movement during the 1930's and 1940's and began exhibiting alongside respected artists including Otis Dozier and Jerry Bywaters.
