In 2009, the winter issue of Nebraska History magazine featured thirty-two artists in a 1930s exhibition, “For the People: Nebraska’s New Deal Art.” An ink-on-paper drawing, Wheels of Progress, by Rose L Cohen, was one of several visuals by the entrants. For some of us familiar with the blanket of statewide pessimism of that era, and also with trends in American art, two conclusions can quickly be reached: This image with its symbols of progress including the newly completed state capitol building was a strong countering message to negativity.
