Ross Merrill was not only an admired painter and teacher, but a proficient conservator of the paintings of others. Describing the former Chief of Conservation at the National Gallery of Art, his successor, Mervin Richard, has called him "one of the great conservators of the 20th Century." Aside from expanding the staffing, mission and reputation of the National Gallery's Conservation Division, he won fame for uncovering forgeries, establishing a world renowned science department, and restoring masterpieces by some of the world's greatest artists.
