A painter, etcher, designer and teacher, Ruth Byers was born and lived in Iowa, but had career activity in Omaha as well as her hometown of Council Bluffs. She was best known for her portrait painting, especially of children, and she occasionally painted landscapes. In Council Bluffs, she gave children’s art classes, and in Omaha, she worked as a bookplate designer for Baker Engraving Company, founded in 1900.
Also in Omaha she took painting lessons from J. Laurie Wallace, one of the city's earliest art teachers, who had been on the faculty of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was a member of the Friends of Art, Nebraska Artists,
