A painter, etcher, designer and teacher, Ruth Byers was born and lived in Iowa, but had career activity in Omaha as well as her hometown of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Her painting focus was portraits, especially children, but she occasionally painted landscapes. In Council Bluffs, she gave children’s art classes, and in Omaha, she worked as a bookplate designer for Baker Engraving Company, founded in 1900.

In Omaha she also took painting lessons from J. Laurie Wallace, and was a member of the Friends of Art, Nebraska Artists, and Omaha Art Guild, with whom she exhibited “nearly every year from 1912 to 1937.” (Dawdy)
