Biography Ruza (Rose) Erceg
Ruza Erceg was born in 1898 in the farming and fishing village of Imotski, Croatia, and came to America as a young bride in 1922.
After first settling down in Pennsylvania, Ruza moved with her husband and children to Portland, Oregon, where she would live for the rest of her life.
By the early 1960’s, with her husband dead and her nine children grown-up and away from home, she remarked to her daughter Helen, “If I have paintbrush, I start to make paintings.”
And lacking any formal training her career as an artist began.
Primarily relying on memory and imagination, Ruza worked with watercolors, colored pencil, and black pen and ink to depict the rural villages and countryside where she spent he
