Born in Missouri, Ryland Loss is especially noted for his scenes of the Adirondack Mountains, where he lived nearby in Voorheesville. He has done numerous etchings of them as well as paintings in gouache and watercolor. In 1970-1971, completed an Adirondack quartet of paintings called "The Four Seasons"---"Spring", "Summer", "Fall" and "Winter". For many years, these paintings were exhibited at the First National Bank in Lake George, but then mysteriously vanished.
He was inspired early in his art career by his home-state views of the Mississippi River and the region of the Ozarks. He studied printing and sculpture at the Art Students League of New York City.
