A contemporary artist working with video and photography, Sam
Taylor-Wood was a Turner Prize nominee in 1997, meaning she had special
recognition as a young British visual artist. She graduated from
Goldsmiths College in London in 1990. She grew up with her mother
and stepfather in Surrey, and the mother left the family when
Taylor-Wood was sixteen years old, which meant that she had to live
alone and struggle to get her education.
After her years at Goldsmiths, she worked at the Royal Opera House and
was a manager at a nightclub, Carnden Palace. In 1994, she
received much attention for her video piece, Killing Time,
which was a mime of an opera score, and from that time, she dedicated
