Samuel Shaver

Samuel M. Shaver was active/lived in Tennessee, Illinois.  Samuel Shaver is known for soldier portraits and landscape painting.

Biography   Samuel Shaver


Samuel M. Shaver was born to David and Catherine (Barringer) Shaver in Sullivan County, Tennessee in 1816.  He married Mary Hannah Elizabeth Powel (1825-1856) at Robertsville, Tennessee on December 30, 1845 and the couple had two children.

Shaver's earliest known portraits date from the year of his marriage.  Between 1845 and 1860, Shaver painted in a number of locations in East Tennessee and taught at the Odd Fellows' Female institute in Rogersville, Tennessee (1851).

When the Civil War broke out, the pro-Confederate Shaver moved to Knoxville where he helped to found the East Tennessee Art Association and was commissioned to paint portraits of fifteen prominent Confederates.
