Sara
Mae Hess was born on February 25, 1875 in Troy Grove, Illinois, the
daughter of Abraham Hess and Sarah Jane Foulk Hess. Her older brother was Harvey Hess. (See note below the text).
Ms. Hess lived in
Troy Grove until she was 19, when she went to the Art Institute of
Chicago to study. After her graduation, she studied in Paris,
France for three years, where she won the first award in the American
Women Artists Association.
Before opening her own studio in
New York, Sara Hess was an art supervisor in the public schools of Benton
Harbor, Michigan and in Gary, Indiana. In her later years, Ms.
Hess resided in San Diego, C
