Biography Simon Gaon
Born in New York City, Simon Gaon became a founder of the Street Painters, a group of eight artists who painted directly from city life they observed on the streets of New York. He studied at the Art Student's League and in 1966 won the Edward G McDowell traveling scholarship.
A close mentor was Arthur Bressler (1927-1975), and they traveled and painted together in Gibraltar, Morocco, and Tangiers. Gaon also painted throughout Europe. In 1972, he and several others formed the Subjectivist Gallery in New York, but it closed due to high rents. In 1977, he and Phillip Sherrod, a friend from earlier days, founded the Street Painters.
