Born in Ohio in 1819. While living in Cincinnati, Hill joined the U.S. Infantry in 1846 and made the cross-country trek to the West. He sketched while on the Platte River in Colorado and was discharged in October of 1847 in Monterey, CA. His view of Monterey was lithographed by a firm in Cincinnati.
