Theodore Brecht was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Charles Brecht, a German import/exporter, who moved from Hanover, Germany to Baltimore in the mid- 1830’s. Evidence suggests that as a young man Theodore went to Europe briefly to study art. He may have returned because of the Civil War.
In 1861 he became a Naval engineer with the rank of Captain; his commission was signed by Abraham Lincoln. During that time he produced many technical drawing of naval equipment and engines. After the War, he left military service and engaged in private practice in engineering, drafting, architecture and as a patent attorney.
