Born in Belgium in 1887. Appia studied art in Berne, Brussels, Petrograd, and Dresden. He emigrated from his home in Geneva, Switzerland to San Francisco in 1921. After settling into a studio-home across the bay in Berkeley, he was active locally for several years. By 1930 he was teaching music in NYC.
