Biography Thomas Sills
Thomas Albert Sills, an African American and the youngest of eleven
children, was born on August 20, 1914 on a farm in Castalia, North
Carolina. During his childhood, Sills moved around several times
attending school intermittently but never finishing his education.
When he was nine years old, he started working at a greenhouse / flower
shop in Raleigh, North Carolina. Here marks an important
development in Sills' life - his intense interest in color, which is
reflected in his works throughout the decades of his career. In
an interview by Jerry Tallmer from the New York Post
printed on January 26, 1980, Sills reflects back on these early years
by remarking, "Sometimes the owner sent me downstair
