Before his painting studies at the Royal Academy in London, the landscape painter and engraver Thomas Daniell served an apprenticeship as a painter of Arms. In 1785, together with his nephew William Daniell, he went to Calcutta for nine years on behalf of the East Indian Company. Here from 1786-1788 he made a series of aquatints with city views that he let local artists colorize.
