Tom Funk was born in Brooklyn in 1911, and attended Amherst College, the Art Students' League and the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, New York. Tom's career included freelance book, magazine and advertising illustration. His work appeared regularly in the New Yorker, the Dramatists Guild Quarterly, Harper's, Woman's Day, Gourmet, House & Garden and Life. He also illustrated Christmas cards and many children's books.
The Funk & Wagnalls dictionary was founded by his grandfather and great-uncle, and Tom illustrated four books on word derivations (Hog on Ice, Heavens to Betsey!, etc.) He
