Painter Tom Lubchenco, born in 1947, was shot to death June 16, 2002 by a man attempting to rob a Wal-Mart in Glenwood Springs, Colorado where the artist had recently been employed.
He was a self-taught, forceful painter with a strong realistic bent. His work ran a gamut of styles from an illustrational "Luke and Tom West of State Bridge," to an intensely realistic "Judith and Holofernes," a starkly direct, Paula Modersohn-Becker-like "Enfant Terrible" -- a painting of a belligerent child -- to a cartoon Mickey Mouse. An avid fly fisherman, his still-lifes of trout are strongly, expressively painted.
