Born in Japan,
Toshi Shimizu arrived in Seattle in
1907. He studied with the Dutch immigrant artist Fokko Tadama (1871-1937) who
had established an art school in Seattle
around 1914. He gained recognition in Seattle
as a promising young painter and won awards with the Seattle Fine Arts Society.
He moved to New York around 1919
and studied at the Art Students League and the Nation
