Biography Toshimitsu Imai
mai moved to France in 1952 and after met with an influential French art critic, Michel Tapié who advocated art informel, and soon the artist joined the movement. In 1957, Imai succeeded to hold two exhibitions with Sam Francis in Tokyo and Osaka and became the genesis of art informel movement spreading out to Japan. This work titled ‘Dark Sun’was executed around 1960 and the artist repeatedly depicted the same subject matter such as ”Light of the East” during the period. The passionate and burning sun Imai depicted possibly evokes Japanese flags. It represents his identity and pride as a Japanese.
