Ulysses Dow Tenney (1826-1908), one of the foremost nineteenth century portrait painters of New Hampshire, was born in Hanover and died in Portsmouth. He studied first with his uncle, portrait painter Adna Tenney (1810-1900), then with Roswell T. Smith of Hanover and Francis Alexander, a leading portraitist of Boston. During his career, he taught a number of students himself in addition to painting, by his own account, nearly 1,000 portraits.
There are 105 records of his works listed in the Smithsonian Inventory, and he is listed in Falk's Who Was Who in American Art, Davenport's Art Reference and Price Guide and The New York Historical Society's Dictionary of A
