Vertis Hayes

Vertis Hayes was active/lived in Tennessee, California.  Vertis Hayes is known for easel and mural painting, sculpture, teaching.

Biography   Vertis Hayes

From Atlanta, Georgia, and with an art career based in Memphis, Tennessee, and Los Angeles, California, Vertis Hayes served in Memphis as an art teacher in Lemoyne College from 1938 to 1949; head of the Federal Art Center, 1938 to 1939; and founder and director of the Hayes Academy of Art, 1947-1952.  In California, he taught at Immaculate Heart College, California State from 1971 to 1974.  He was also a mural painter with the Federal Art Project in New York City from 1934 to 1938.

In addition to teaching, Hayes was a painter, muralist and sculptor of religious themes. His mural, Pursuit of Happiness, an Africa to America chronology, is at the Harlem Hospital in New York.  Other murals include The Chelsea St   ...  Displaying 750 of 1624 characters.
