Biography Virginia Lewis (Powel) Worthington
Born in Washington DC and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Virginia Worthington was a painter, graphic artist and teacher. She studied art with Harry de Young in San Antonio, painted in summer school under the direction of Xavier Gonzalez, and graduated from Sophie Newcomb College in 1936.
For two years she then worked at the Cincinnati Art Museum in the art education department and then returned to Teaxas to teach briefly in the public schools in San Antonio. During World War II, she did defense work on Long Island, New York, and after the War moved to Bristol, Rhode Island and then Providence, where her husband, Harford Powel, took degrees at Brown University.
