Born to William Combs and Lovina Winter in New York on May 1, 1837, Voltaire Combe later changed his surname to Combe.
He was the cousin of Sarah Jane Hodge Barnard, wife of the highly regarded Civil War photographer George N Barnard (1816 -1902).
Combe served as a bugler soldier in the Third New York Cavalry during the Civil War. His countless sketches and memories from this period provided him lifelong inspiration in his art.
He was a portrait and landscape artist - also a successful illustrator and printmaker.
