Biography   Walter Hemenway


Walter Hemenway was born April 8, 1885 in Gardner, Massachusetts to Walter Hemenway and Ida (Gale) Balcom.  He graduated from Gardner High School in 1904 and later from the Norwich Art School in Norwich, Connecticut and the Art Student League of New York..

Hemenway was noted as an artist, particularly for his sporting scenes for such magazine covers as National Sportsman, Hunting and Fishing, Outdoors, and Outdoor Life.

A friend and colleague, Norman Rockwell once said that "there wasn't another artist in the country who could paint expressions in the faces of animals and birds as well as Walt did."  Hemenway visited the Rockwell home in Arlington, Vt. in 1943.
