Biography Wilhelm Gimmi
Wilhelm Gimmi was born in 1886, in Zurich, Switzerland. He began his artistic career in Paris, where he spent the first 32 years of his life as an artist - known as a painter of classical nudes. While in France, Wilhelm attended the Académie Julian. In 1919, he exhibited in the Salon d'Automne with artists such as Bonnard, Matisse and Marquet.
In 1940, Wilhelm moved back Switzerland, to the town of Chexbres, with its spectacular views over Lake Geneva (Lac Leman).
Wilhelm Gimmi died in 1965 in Chexbres, Switzerland. His biography appears in the Benezit and the Grove Dictionary of Art. The Jenisch Museum in Vevey, Switzerland, houses the Wilhelm Gimmi Foundation and an important collection of his works.
