William August Shade, also known as Schade ( 19 November 1848 in New York City , died September 26, 1890 in Switzerland ), was an American portrait and genre painter from the Düsseldorf school. After a school education in Chicago, Shade, son of German-born parents, came to Düsseldorf at the age of 19. At the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf he studied in the years 1868 to 1878. There, Andreas and Karl Müller were his teachers, as well as Wilhelm Sohn , where he deepened the portrait and genre painting. For health reasons he went to Italy after his studies. At the Berlin academy exhibition of the year 1888 he earned an honorable mention.
