Biography William Fraser Garden
William Fraser Garden was born Garden William Fraser in Gillingham, Kent, on 10 June, 1856. His family moved to Bedford in 1861 - his father was a retired army surgeon who moved to Bedford from Edinburgh because the Harpur Trust at Bedford paid for the education of his seven sons. Whilst at Bedford Grammar School, Garden Fraser studied art under Bradford Rudge (1813-1885). He showed regularly at the Royal Academy from 1880. Moving with his parents to Hemingford Grey, Huntingdonshire, in 1887, Fraser Garden married and settled there in 1889. Sadly, bad with money, he was declared bankrupt in 1899, a state of affairs that led, five years later, to his wife leaving him, with their six children.
