William Henry Luscomb is recorded as head of household in the 1830 through 1860 censuses of Salem, Massachusetts. Though his 1860 record does state that he was born in New York, his 1850 census states Massachusetts, and he is surely closely related to the other Luscombs who lived in Essex County, Massachusetts, since 1675. These Luscombs were a seafaring family from Maine (a territory of Massachusetts at the time), who left there due to "Indian troubles." A number of them, some in successive generations, listed their occupation as "painter," though it was not always clear whether the reference was to art or engineering - terminology included painter, house painter, sign and fancy painter, portrait painter, and ornamenta
