According to Alfred Frankenstein in his book "The Reality of Appearance," the entire literature on Yates seems to consist of a single paragraph in an article in Magazine Antiques, November 1963. "It says that he lived in Auburn, New York, where he painted local views, sweeping Western panoramas, scenes of New York City, and a Battle of Gettysburg bought by the 1881 encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic and presented to the Soldiers' Home in bath, New York, in that year. "
It is also known that he painted in the Finger Lakes area of New York.
